The Fascist Peace, 2023

Printed at KKV Farsta in collaboration with Angélica Chávez Cáceres and Linda Samuelsson as part of Edition Grafikens Hus. (Call For Print, 2022)

This collaborative piece, crafted alongside Angélica Chávez Cáceres during our time in Stockholm, serves as a reflection on our ongoing processes with Hysterix collective, which started working in Lima in 2012. Intended primarily for various protests in Peru, the images hold profound significance. Notably, one image, situated in the upper right corner, bears the poignant inscription ‘Lo Vimos todos, a Victor lo mató la Policía’ (‘We all saw it, Victor was killed by the police’). This image emerged amidst the social protests that erupted at the end of 2022, fueled by one of several political crises in Peru. More than 50 individuals have fallen victim to state-sponsored violence under this dictatorship in Peru. These atrocities, streamed live by civilians, serve as chilling evidence of ‘legal’ crimes perpetuated by nation-states, often veiled within the narrative of national security and citizen protection. These killings carried out in the name of peace, symbolize a disturbing manifestation of fascist tranquility.

Another image depicts a pig being kicked in the groin by a powerful woman of indigenous descent. With support from the collective Las Insurgentes, this drawing evolved into a screen-printed motif used in various street interventions in Lima since 2017.  In the work created for Grafikens Hus, the depicted pig transforms into the image of a police officer, specifically a “riot police officer,” adorned with heavy equipment. English and Swedish words have been added, conveying the message of fascism’s violence, oppression, dehumanization, and murder in the name of peacemaking: The fascist Peace.

Here an interview with the curator of the Exhibition, Nilo Amlashi(who also translated it into Swedish 🌷) about the extended ongoing life of the imagery in the piece, and other stories.
